The New South Wales town of Young lies on the South West Slopes of the state and enjoys good transport links with the rest of the country, being on the Olympic Highway which means it is less than a 2 hour drive to the capital Canberra. The region was originally inhabited by the Wiradjuri people prior to the first European settlers arriving in 1826 when James White established his Burrangong Station in 1826. The town developed rapidly in the mid-1860s and is named after Sir John Young, a governor of the state. The town also enjoys the benefit of its own Toompang Racecourse, located about 3 miles from the town centre, where racing is generally staged twice a year. The Young Turf Club holds its annual meeting on the third Saturday in May when the highlight of the card is the Young Cup over 1600 metres. However, the region of Burrangong, directly west of Young, combines with the town to host a Picnic Race meeting in October when the six race card features the Burrangong Picnic Race Cup over 1400 metres which is traditionally held on the first Saturday in October.
